The Detective and The Strange Thief
Chapter 14
"Let's eat."
Nakahara Chūya didn't stand on ceremony. She said, "Oh," and picked up the pork chop rice in front of her.
"You'll have to confess after eating this." Taizai sat at the table opposite the interrogation room. He folded his hands and rested his chin on them. He smiled and looked at Chūya, who was eating.
"I suspect there's something wrong with you." Chūya put down her bowl and pointed at her head with a wooden face.
"Don't worry, I've already taken care of the surveillance cameras."
Taizai's face was full of praise. "Didn't we talk last time about how you found out that the display cabinets were all fake?"
It would have been better if he hadn't mentioned it. As soon as he mentioned it, Chūya recalled the embarrassing scene that day. She was furious. She rolled up the tissue she had just wiped her mouth and threw it at Taizai's head.
"You're assaulting a police officer, and you're knowingly breaking the law."
Taizai tilted his head and dodged. "I don't think we need to wait for any evidence. It's not a bad idea to just close the case and lock you up for twenty years."
"Is that so?" Chūya drank a mouthful of water. "Didn't you turn off the surveillance cameras?
Then I'm going to sue you for illegal interrogation. "
"… You're not cute," Taizai muttered softly and looked at his watch. "There are still fifteen minutes left. We have to hurry."
Chūya also stopped looking like she was watching a good show. She began to recall seriously.
"When I found out that the cabinets were all fake, I went to look for Asai. He said that he didn't know anything about it and that he bought the items from reliable friends and organizations. After that, we agreed to meet in his office at 7: 30 p.m. to discuss the matter in detail."
"7: 30 p.m.," Taizai repeated. "Eight o 'clock was the time stated in the advance notice letter."
"I know, but I couldn't refuse at the time." Chūya frowned. "And I thought that there were police officers in the entire building, not to mention …"
"What's more, compared to Azai-sama, you're much stronger," Taizai continued, "Apart from you, does anyone else know about your appointment at 7: 30?"
"No," Chūya recalled. "At least when the two of us were talking, there was no one around.
After that, I went to look for him at the appointed time, and then … "
"Asai was also in the room at that time?"
"Yes."
Chūya still felt a faint pain in the back of his head when he thought about it. "But I fainted after we talked for a while."
"There are only two of you in the room?"
"It's just the two of us," Chūya said with certainty. "The room isn't big. At least when I'm awake, it's just the two of us."
"This is interesting …" Taizai tapped his knuckles on the table unconsciously. "The two of you are in a room. One is unconscious and the other is dead."
"But, there's something …" Chūya gestured for Taizai to come closer and listen.
Taizai raised his eyebrows and moved his face closer.
Taizai felt his warm breath in his ear, which made him feel a little absent-minded.
"Although I'm not sure if it really happened," Chūya paused for a moment. "But when I was unconscious, I seemed to have heard someone say, 'You can only blame yourself for taking something you shouldn't have.'"
Taizai opened his eyes abruptly and asked in a deep voice, "Who said that?"
"Asai."
"Got it."
Taizai stood up and stretched his limbs as if he was stretching his muscles and bones. He even did a spin. "If that's the case, it's much easier."
"You have an idea?"
Chūya looked at him and frowned. "Then hurry up and close the case and let me out. It's really boring to stay here."
"I just have an idea." Taizai brushed his bangs. "I still need some information, and …"
He suddenly leaned over and put his arms on the table. The tip of his nose was close to Chūya's.
"Let's take this opportunity to find the mole in the police force, shall we?"
"You have a clue?" Chūya did not avoid his gaze. His icy blue eyes met with the brown ones. "Who is it?"
"I don't know." Taizai suddenly smiled.
"…" Zhong Ye didn't even think about it. He raised his fist and was about to hit.
"You can't hit me."
Taizai stepped back and Chūya's hand was chained to the table. He was so angry that he slammed the table. "Go away."
"Two more minutes. I'll leave after that."
Taizai looked at his watch. "I won't be able to come here again. So just this once, tell me what you think."
"If Asai really said that, then he probably discovered my identity as Strange Thief N, but I can't figure out why."
Chūya said slowly. "This trap may have been targeted at me from the beginning. They probably also suspect that the police have Strange Thief N."
"Indeed, the police have Strange Thief N's people," the Prime Minister repeated pointedly.
Chūya ignored him and continued, "I've checked Asai's villa. There's nothing valuable except for the blue diamonds. It's very strange. Is he really a rich businessman?
The things in his display cabinets are not even as expensive as the butler's gold watch. "
Taizai looked interested. "The butler's gold watch?
I don't even remember seeing it. "
"It's a professional habit," Chūya rolled his eyes at him. "The butler once took it out to look at the time in the living room.
The style is very unique, and it looks like it's been around for a long time … If I'm not wrong, it should be a family heirloom. "
Taizai applauded.
"Lastly, if Asai wanted to set me up from the beginning, then the diamond theft should have been targeted at me. So why did I become a suspect and faint in the room, and why did Asai and the other maid inexplicably die?"
Taizai was about to say something when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"It's time."
Chūya made a gesture. "Have a safe trip. I won't see you out."
"Then I'll be leaving." Taizai stood up. "The next time we meet will be after the case is closed. Be careful."
"Got it.
Chūya nodded. "
Taizai looked at him deeply again. "I'm serious. Be careful."
"Mhmm."
Taizai looked at him again, then pushed the door open and left.
The pale lights, the pale walls, and the pale body on the metal plate.
Akiko Yosano opened the toolbox and whispered to the few policemen standing next to him, "It's about to start. If you don't feel well, you can leave first."
No one answered, but it was just a routine question anyway. Akiko began the autopsy.
"The report was submitted just now."
She leaned over to look at Asai's face. "Poison was found in the cup, and the concentration of poison in the blood reached a lethal level."
"So, the cause of death was poison poisoning?"
Atsushi Nakajima had just recovered from his cold. He hurriedly read the crime scene report twice before coming over. Now he was full of questions. "So, was the cause of death a ruptured artery or poison …"
"Poison," Akiko answered.
"This …" Atsushi Nakajima was stunned. "Then why did the murderer do this?"
No one answered him.
The few of them stood silently at the side and waited for another forty minutes before Xie Ye finally finished the autopsy. After covering the corpse with a cloth again, Xie Ye said to them, "
"The detailed report will be sent to you in two hours."
"Thank you for your hard work."
"Have you notified the family?" Akiko asked.
"This …" Kokida squeezed the notebook and whispered, "The victim only has one son. He's eight years old this year and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital's ICU."
"How could this be?" Atsushi Nakajima's eyes widened. "How is the family now …?"
"Nishio Butler is in charge of this now. He's also at the Metropolitan Police Department."
"This is too difficult."
Atsushi Nakajima lowered his head and was the first to walk out of the autopsy room. "I feel like I should find a chance to visit them …"
Akutagawa's expression was not good. He seemed to be disdainful of Atsushi Nakajima for worrying too much, but he didn't say anything in the end. He only thanked Akiko for his hard work and left with Kokida.
They still had many things to do. For example, there were many strange things that had yet to be solved in this overly straightforward and chaotic case.
"You seem to have something to say." Akiko Yosano looked at Taizai who was standing on the side. "Why? Do you have any questions?"
"Consider it a personal request."
Taizai walked to the body and lifted the cloth to reveal Asai Kazuichi's head. "Dissect here."
"Why?"
"Consider it my own guess." Taizai bent down and carefully examined Asai Kazuichi's head. "If you find any scars on his skin, you can cut them open to take a look."
"It seems that you don't want to tell me what it is."
Akiko Yosano put on his gloves again. "Since it's a personal request, if I really find something, should I write it down in the final report?"
"Up to you."
Taizai began to take off his plastic coat. "But please be careful. That thing, if I'm not wrong, is probably …"
He moved closer to Akiko Yosano's ear and whispered something that only the two of them could hear.
"Taguchi Rokuzo?"
The young man hid behind the door and peeked out an eye to look warily at the Grand Chancellor. "Who are you?"
Taizai immediately raised his hand and smiled kindly. "My name is Osamu Dazai. I'm a detective."
The door was immediately slammed shut.
Taizai quickly pressed the doorbell again. "Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong?"
"Are you the Grim Reaper?" The teenager's voice came from the walkie-talkie.
"…" Taizai had no choice but to tell the truth. "I want to ask you to help me investigate some information, so I got your contact from Kokida."
"I see." The teenager's voice sounded much friendlier. "Wait a minute, I'll open the door for you."
Taizai heard the clanking sound of metal and smiled awkwardly.
After a few minutes, the teenager opened the door. "Sorry, I set up a lot of traps here.
I'm a hacker, so I have to be careful of people who come uninvited. "
The Grand Chancellor's hand in his pocket secretly dropped the pin.
"Please come in." The teenager welcomed him into the house. "It's a little dark."
Taizai looked at the crowded darkness. There were only a few large monitors in the room that emitted faint fluorescent lights. Against his will, he replied, "I think it's okay."
The teenager had already returned to his seat in front of the computer. "Did Uncle Kokida ask you to come here?
If there's anything you want to investigate, just let me know. "
"Yes."
Taizai answered without hesitation. He directly ignored Kokida's "What are you doing to my child?" look when she reluctantly wrote him an address. He handed the teenager a piece of paper. "It's these people."
"Got it." The teenager took the paper and began to quickly type on the keyboard. "I'll send it to you tomorrow afternoon."
